Walking away from a long-term relationship can be an extremely hard thing to do. Even if it is difficult, sometimes it is the right thing to do and it leaves us with mixed emotions in the aftermath. ‘If I Never See Your Face Again’ by Norwegian singer-songwriter Hanne Leland is an emotional, pop ballad that addresses her own experiences with heartbreak. She uses her mesmerizing voice to remind us that there is a more positive and healthy manner of dealing with failed relationships, something that we often forget when faced with grief and confusion.
Composed and written by Hanne, the song is wonderfully produced, creating an atmosphere catered towards consequential reflection. There is an almost cinematic feel to the way that the track progresses, building up and then slowly fading away. This really sets the tone for the heartfelt words, which sound like an open letter to her other half. To tug on the heartstrings both lyrically and sonically is no easy feat, and Hanne could do so while embracing a sadness that we are all too familiar with. She concludes with, ‘If I never see your face again / I just thought you should know‘ as a sign that failed relationships do not need to be about resentment and grudges, but instead can be about acceptance and gratitude. Her ability to connect with us through this bittersweet ballad builds excitement for her upcoming EP ‘Melacholic Mind’ and points towards a promising future for her as an artist.
