With a record that screams something cryptic and unusual yet continually has your ears perked and your interest piqued, Iuliano’s ‘De-Algorithm’ sees the complex and intricate delivered to you into something delectably melodic and palatable. Somewhat like a Glass Animals record, but magnitudes weirder and with a dollop of folk infusion to bring alongside, Iuliano takes the magical and experimental together into a confluence that is far more than just quirky and edgy. One listen to ‘On The Radio’ are you’re left hopelessly bewildered and hypnotically transfixed. Magical falsetto vocals, thumping and thundering drums, blissfully transcendent string work, and a cacophony of electronic sounds that shouldn’t all mesh together as magnificently as they do.
The project is described by Iuliano as “an esoteric concept album that serves a sardonic critique and near parody of the new digital world order ruled by algorithms and the plight of analog humans who must navigate life under the cold calculus of artificial reason.” So yes, there is undoubtedly a touch of narcissistic pretention to the concept and the actual soundscapes on ‘De-Algorithm’. But, by no means does that make the resulting record anything less enjoyable. Each song is lusciously melodic, filled with little oddities and eccentricities to make it all the more enjoyable as an experimental piece and as a sheer journey to deep dive into.
‘De-Algorithm’ is innovative, progressive, and wholly diverse in its expression. There’s nothing direct, it’s all over the place but cohesive at the same time. There’s something cacophonic and melodic embedded within. A wonderfully experimental piece.
