I rarely find myself so intrigued by a tune that feels so starkly in its own world as “YO-YO”. iVANA’s latest indie pop extravaganza is many things, so many in fact that I can’t really seem to pin it down to a particular world or genre whatsoever. It’s blitzkrieg in its pace and tempo, but seemingly smooth and serene in its mood and vocal performance. Somehow combining a rapid and unrelenting beat with a nostalgic vocal performance and a few almost video game-esque samples strewn in, it helps you sort of recover and rekindle the inner child in you that’s been repressed and lost over the years gone by.
There’s something so innately childlike and playful about YO-YO, both brought to life by the joyfulness in iVANA and Brodie Harvey’s performance and the sparkle in the production. It’s indie, but in its own unique way. A dancey bop from another time that’s both futuristic and 90s all at once, this is a perfect way to release and recover what was lost long ago.
