Leeds-based alternative singer-songwriter Jaayns creates lyrically driven, alternative electronic-pop music. Her latest single ‘Real Things’ is a beautiful example of her talent, with its poetic nature and gentle melodies. She began by collaborating with other artists and producers before launching her solo career in 2017 with her debut EP ‘Bright White Yellow.’ Her music has received notable recognition and in 2021, Jaayns signed with the independent British record label No Such Things Records.
Her music seems incredibly reflective. ‘Real Things’ feels like a coming-of-age song, trying to make sense of her position in a society where with each passing day, the approval of unknown people is being considered sacrosanct. It is a search to find the strength and confidence to fight insecurities and fears that keep us from being who we are in the digital age. The synth-driven melodies are beautifully captivating and really show that Jaayns is an artist who is ready to explore to find the right sound that drives home her message. Influenced by artists like Bjork, Banks and St. Vincent, you can hear those influences in her song which delicately balances layered beats and synths with an intimate vocal delivery.
Co-produced with Leeds-based producer Ben Matravers, ‘Real Things’ is a track that is likely to get stuck in your head on the first listen. It is clear that Jaayns finds her comfort in music, and that encourages those who listen to her to find comfort in it too. There’s a lot of meaning that drives the song, but it never feels overwhelming, which marks her ability to make accessible and experimental music at the same time. There is a lot of appreciation that Jaayns deserves, and it is clear that there is a lot to look forward to.
