Jackie Marchal – Rhubarb Fields

Rhubarb Fields is precisely the kind of indie rock music that made me absolutely fall in love with the genre. In Jackie’s own words, the track is meant to “memorialize a memory by shifting it into an artifact.” In other words, it’s the kind of track that evokes memories and compels you into a lulled state of nostalgia. The production is luscious, filled with spacey and dreamy vocals with slightly hazy guitars. It’s also a song about a place, a specific area that lives long in Jackie’s memory for the memories she associates with it.

Inspired by a magical patch of rhubarb that thrived for over a century behind her grandparent’s house, Marchal crafted Rhubarb Fields to honour her grandfather’s life. To me as a listener, it made me harken back to similar memories, particularly the paddy fields that used to go on for miles upon miles near my ancestral home.

So if you have an affection for indie pop, for the memories that tunes coated in such luscious and dreamy soundscapes can provide, Jackie Marchal’s latest record is bound to be one that will live long in your memory, and help you recover the long gone memories.
