Despite growing up in a big city, I’d often go to my ancestral home as a child to spend time with family and grandparents. There’s a quaintness to that space, the more connected feeling it had with nature, the more familial element to the community as a whole. Jesabel’s latest town ‘This Small Town’ doesn’t just capture that feeling, it has you weeping with nostalgia and warmth at the memories you’ve had and the emotion it brings out. The tune is based on her personal perspective growing up in a small town in Georgia and the various nuances of trying to figure yourself out in a place you don’t quite belong or understand.
It’s a folk song in the truest sense of the word, melodic and fairly stripped back with a simple acoustic melody guiding it along. But at its core, its the feeling, the emotion, and the sense of coming of age that really defines it. I always love art about spaces and this is no exception. Remarkably crafted and clearly performed and conceived with a whole lot of heart behind it, This Small Town is wonderful to hear and elevated by the video it comes with.
