The latest piece from Valencia based English singer-songwriter Joe Wilkinson is a magical piece of folk-pop. ‘Water to Wine’ as a lyric or title in itself inspires some sort of mystical and rosy eyed visions of a better day or time. You feel like being inspired to take the mundane and turn it into something magical and refreshing. Wilkinson’s voice, expressive and emotive, inspires upliftment and empowerment with each intonation and word. ‘I know that in time, everything will be fine’ has you singing along immediately after the first listen of the chorus.
It makes you feel reassured, has you taking all the stress and anxiety built up in your head and instantly starting to look at it with some sort of unrelenting optimism. You don’t feel scared or fearful that things aren’t going to work out or that your life not be falling into place.
When I first put ‘Water to Wine’ on, I was in a dark place. I was stressed, completely unsure about where I was going and whether anything would fall into place. But Wilkinson’s ability to turn this darkness into something to power through is refreshingly reassuring. It’s nothing audacious, it’s just the perfect kind of acoustic folk driven music that will have you believing that everything happens for a reason and your life is heading somewhere worthwhile. Just believe, and wait for the water turn to wine.
