‘Mona Lisa’ is a song that immediately had me harkening back to the British indie rock groups I idolised and found myself infatuated with while growing up. That same sense of melodic quality, that urgency in the atmosphere, that pained emotion behind infectious chorus lines all comes crisply through on this single from the ‘Junkyard Romantics’. There’s a sense of eclectic exuberance that this group is able to converge at on this single. Effectively managing to combine and synthesise styles that range from traditional britpop and early indie rock alongside a psychedelic veneer that also brings a sense of pop punk, it’s the perfect combination for any indie obsessed kid.
As far as a first single goes, this is a debut to remember. Junkyard Romantics are bound to make waves in the capital, ready to challenge for the title of most exciting new rock outfit in the UK.
