Justin the Lover – Form and Function

If Backflipbackflip doesn’t turn out to be one of the best opening tracks to a record this year, I’m dying to encounter what usurps that title I’m so readily willing to grant it. The absolute freneticism, the repetitive cacophonic utterance of its title, the mayhem in the beat, and the relentless drive all just kickstart Justin the Lover’s record ‘Form and Function’ into some sort of formula one machine that’s not stopping for a moment’s notice. It’s chaos uninhibited, but it also maintains a keen sense of rhythm that has you absolutely entranced and engrossed in its energy. And hey, I’m just on track one.

Form and Function is a scintillating piece of electronic music. It’s not for everyone, and I’ll make that marker clear here itself. But in the absolute rollercoaster nature of the beats on this record, you’d be hard pressed to find a single techno fan who won’t fall in love with this record. Of course, the record does shift gears from that adrenaline rush in the later tracks. But never once does Form and Function really let you loose, it’s madness that you have to entirely imbibe. All Flows Down draws from Kanye’s All Falls Down, and consequently Lauryn Hill. There’s diversity across the record that’s just waiting for you to explore.

It’s dance music that you want to find yourself raving to. I’d be hard pressed to find a record that’s got even half the energy of Form and Function with even an iota of the creativity that Justin the Lover possesses. Haywire but magical.
