Robotic, futuristic, or whatever you’d like to call it, Lane Lines “Like To Look Sad” is a euphoric and immersive alternative pop escape that feels as luscious as they come by. You find yourself boated away, whisked into a maze that helps you navigate through your own internal dilemmas from love, loss, to deeper traumas embedded within. The tuning on the vocals, the shift from this overly sheened hyper-pop almost video-game stylisation to occasional abrasive rough experiments makes for something so easy to slip away into. “We look sad” is such a lovely refrain to repeat and echo, having you wallow in self-pity but in a way that’s kind of cute and still a bit up-beat and positive nonetheless.
It’s an emo song fundamentally, but quite clearly boasting a well produced and high attention pop exterior to make it that much more memorable.
