A quaint and endearing song about something inanimate yet something so obviously meaningful, Laura Dannan’s quirky and heartful tune “Little Grey” is perhaps the most poignant piece about a car that I’ve had the pleasure of hearing. You can hear this acoustic folk piece’s stripped down arrangement as a deeper evocation of what we cherish for what it means to us and us alone. It’s a metaphor towards letting go, the struggle of having to move on from the past and what it held for us.
Laura Dannan’s song is bittersweet, it feels like the kind that has you in the throes of nostalgia, but also feeling a bit hurt that the time has gone past. It’s quaint, minimal, yet deeply heartfelt and warm nonetheless. For anyone who’s had to let go that vehicle that served them well for days on days, “little Grey” might be a bit too real.
