There’s something about the right kind of strumming on an Americana tune that really grips my attention and instantly perks my mood. On “Magpie Heart”, LittleFox takes no time to instantly have me falling in love and ready to embark on the journey that is Ghost In This House. As she sings “Let’s get lost”, you can’t help but find yourself feeling endeared and connected with.
“Ghost In This House” is an album that encapsulates the emotional rollercoaster of the pandemic years. Written during the plague-ridden period, the songs reflect a range of emotions, from sparkling happiness to deep despair. It’s almost a personal journey for Alison Jenkins or LittleFox, navigating through the challenges and complexities of the world during a time of turmoil.
The pandemic brought about contrasting experiences for all of us, and for LittleFox, it was a strangely happy time. Immersed in creativity, the artist spent hours writing songs and playing instruments, finding solace and joy in their craft. The album captures this sense of cocooned happiness, where LittleFox flourished while others struggled.
However, there is a poignant realization that accompanies these highs. As the world continued to suffer, the artist grappled with the question of their own role in the face of ongoing challenges. The record thereby explores the tension between personal contentment and the overwhelming awfulness that persists globally. LittleFox contemplates their own agency and the impact they can have amidst the turmoil.
One recurring theme throughout “Ghost In This House” is the concept of place. It delves into the search for meaning and belonging, the elation of finding it, and the heartbreaking experience of having it forcibly taken away. Through storytelling, LittleFox weaves narratives of people, mysteries, and places, providing a glimpse into the human condition and the universal longing for connection.
Personal favourites for me come in the opener itself and the rather pained poignancy of “Thirsty”. A powerful and emotionally resonant Americana record.
