‘Reveries’ feels like the ocean in a state of absolute stillness. It effortlessly exudes an air of tranquillity through sounds that are offbeat, unexplored, and sometimes even incredulous. Allowing yourself to languish in the subtlety of the composition, the softness of the entire apparatus, and the somehow overwhelming quietness of the void it creates, you get transported into your own personal world, a part of your consciousness you wouldn’t normally be able to access. It isn’t enjoyed as a background track, nor does it help you concentrate on something else. It almost necessitates your focus in its emptiness, letting you immerse yourself and wander ever inwards until your own state of mind is truly unlocked.
Drone music with a feeling and a care to it, M. Cross Dougherty’s latest is a magical evocation.
