Giving a voice and sound to a dream, to a fantastical ‘what if’ scenario, Maddie Park’s latest acoustic dominant contemporary pop tune is a light, entrancing, yet bouncy record. Park’s sultry and silky vocals, with a slight grit amidst her impeccable falsetto complements the more minimal and subtle production that’s driven by a light hearted, almost shimmering and sunny guitar instrumental that anchors the entire piece. That notion of ‘what if’, the constant wonder and second guessing we overthink night in and night out leaves us both bewildered and curious about what could have been. At the end of the day, it’s all a ‘fantasy’ inside our head that compels us to think this way.
Maddie composed the entire song in under an hour, a song-writing process that she describes as something that was entirely done under a trance like state. Park finds her influence in contemporary megastars that lay an emphasis on lyrical flow, such as SZA, Ariana Grande, and Jhene Aiko. That sultry style is definitively mimicked but reworked to fit Park’s own strengths.
