Mae Krell – Colorblind | On Loss, Love, and Goodbyes

I wrote “colorblind” in the midst of what I thought was going to be the end of a relationship with the first girl I ever truly fell in love with.”

That quote alone should tell you all you need to know about the single. It’s about that overwhelming sense of impending disappointment, heartbreak, and anxiety. For any overthinker out there who’s been in a relationship, that crushing weight of feeling it’s all going to hell is far too familiar. Mae’s voice is simply ethereal — a little low, a little withdrawn, but unafraid to throw all their emotion into each note. “We walk together to the car park, as if there was something left to say. I squeezed your hand, you flinched.” In no way is ‘colorblind’ grandiose, it’s about the minutia of everyday that makes us feel overwhelmed because of how much we care about our better halves.

The New York City native is talented beyond their voice — guitar, piano, the ukulele are all part of the repertoire. Mae’s singles have amassed millions of streams in the past, with ‘garden’, ‘home’, and ‘wash’ each hitting over half a million on Spotify alone. Moreover, Mae is also avidly involved in the music industry beyond their artistry alone. They’ve photographed live music for Rolling Stone and Sony RCA, founded the online music publication Tongue Tied Magazine and also started Bitch Mgmt, a multimedia marketing and PR company.

But all that should be secondary. At this present moment. ‘colorblind’ is one of those special songs that has an everyone feeling to it because it’s about sentiments that are universal. Their voice on the chorus, “I never practiced my goodbyes, I didn’t think that I had to and now you’re gone I’m colorblind, nothing lights up the sky, so numb that I can’t cry”. With so many songs about love out there, I find it amazing that musicians are able to create a new expression to vocalise these emotions. The metaphor may be obvious, but that doesn’t mean it won’t hit you like a truck.
