Not one to disappoint , Maejis Mind’s latest three track EP ‘At Water’ continues the LA based artist’s journey into crafting delectably melodic and genre defying pieces of psychedelic music that leave you in a state of seemingly endless tranquillity and bliss. Departing slightly from his previous sounds which leaned more into psychedelic rock, At Water goes into more pop sounding elements with hints of r&b strewn across. But what’s consistent here, and what’s consistent with Maejis’ sound overall, is the ever present existence of an energy that feels atmospheric, flowing, and blissful.
On ‘Watch The Rain’ itself, you’re greeted with an opening guitar focused piece that feels like you’re flowing down the river or being showered under a pleasant drizzle. The song illustrates the story of a person who wants to stay within happy memories, completely dissociating from the hardships around them. But deep down, you know that you can’t hide forever and that reality is eventually going to come sinking down onto you. It’s one of my favourite pieces from Maejis yet, long and with a strong focus on a progressive element that builds ever so gradually and meticulously. You can hear the evolution of his own sound so wonderfully across the record, a marked maturity and clear sense of progress that he’s been able to build over the past few months.
‘There Was A Time’ sees a return to the more psychedelic rock sounds that Maejis is perhaps more renowned for. There’s a heavy use of distortion and interpolation, with glaring synths and 808s completely basking in the now well used 80s sound. The final track sees the record come full circle via an acoustic driven piece that gives the listener a sense of deep catharsis and return to reality from the magical and almost otherworldly soundscapes put together on the rest of the album.
Maejis Mind remains one of my favourite artists in recent memory. His continual evolution and refusal to adhere to any particular style, sound, or genre is incredibly refreshing. ‘At Water’ is him at his best and I can’t wait to see where he goes from here.
