I’ve been a fan of Magic Finger for a while now. Their last record, ‘I Guess That’s It On Happy Endings’, had one of my favourite pieces of the year with ‘Something About The Moment’. It’s hard to come across a group who so effortlessly seem to capture that undying sense of nostalgia on a single pulsating piece of indie rock. On their latest dual track release, they’re exploring their sound far more. A slight departure from the more conventional indie rock style on the last album, ‘Room 607/Did I Say Anything Meaningful (When Saying Goodbye)’, is a bit fuzzier in sound and melancholic in tone. The first piece, ‘Room 607’, has an almost lethargically depressive vocal performance drowned out by hazy guitars and aggressive but not loud drumming. It’s got an almost cacophonic air to it, with a whole flurry of different sounds jumping at each other similar, but not nearly as frenetic, as the final minutes of ‘Heroin’ by the Velvet Underground.
The second piece is more morose and restrained. The vocals are pained, deeply emotive, and a more pulsating synth beat. Loss, sadness, and growing up are foundational to this record. As a recent college graduate myself, there’s something so innately relatable and meaningful about Magic Finger’s music, and this new EP is just another brick in that emotional rollercoaster they force you to introspect on.
