Mark Winters – Boundary Layer

From multi-talented singer-songwriter, guitarist, and poet Mark Winters comes the poignant and refreshing pop rock record ‘Boundary Layer’. Driven and carried by supple Americana melodies, Winters’ latest project just exudes a certain innocence and joyfulness that feels sorely lacking in today’s style of rock music. Influenced by the unconventional melodic chord progressions of a John Mayer while still appreciating the subtlety and simplicity of that same song-writing style you’d expect from a Tom Petty, Winters’ work combines emotions that are easily digestible with guitar work and infectious lyricism that has you singing along and jingling alongside.

Starting with a more casual and happy go lucky energy on the opening and titular track, Winters’ drastically changes the vibe on ‘Heartbeat’. Here, there’s a marked difference not just in the voice he’s using to sing with but also the more gruelling and heavy electric work on the guitar. Don’t for a minute underestimate his quality with the strings, effortlessly being able to dish out delectable melodies and slick solos at a whims notice. It’s equally impressive as it is addictive.

So for anyone who’s intrigued or interested in the works of a singer-songwriter who’s got a bit of lyrical dexterity but more enamouring in his ability to pen down slightly different but wholly pleasurable chords and melodies, Boundary Layer is bound to strike the right notes. Winters’ work is well worth an exploration, with his 2019 record Slipstream being a welcome highlight as well.
