Matt Monsoor’s latest single just exudes sunniness. The alternative folk musician has a grit and ease to his voice, a contrast that makes for the right kind of comfort and warmth. There’s nothing too outlandish or experimental about this record, it simply ticks all the boxes you’d want to see addressed in a folk tune. ‘Galloway’ is happy, it’s optimistic, it’s warm, and it’s radiant. Monsoor’s vocals on top of that calming acoustic guitar make for the kind of mundane yet dazzlingly reassuring folk for a normal day at home. It is, put simply, the best kind of comfort music.
And the song’s conception attests to this really. In Monsoor’s own words, it’s ‘A reflection of an evening spent with my best friend and partner of over twenty years. We like hanging out.’ Nothing grandiose or over the top, just finding the things to appreciate and love within the everyday. After all, that’s what folk music is all about.
