The debut EP from May Roze sees the London based pop artist truly finding her niche in the space of dark, ethereal, and dreamy pop soundscapes. The mesmerizingly transcendental record basks in soundscapes that sound like hypnotic melodies alongside vocals that float like a sheet of ice on a still lake. It’s deceptively innovative and wholly unique in its harmonies and arrangements. Slightly metallic and ravenously raw, Roze describes her album with colours because she sees it visually. And it’s completely understandable why. There’s a visual vibrancy on the record, with soundscapes that feel inherently illuminating and resplendent. Red is the colour and rawness is the passion.
‘Heal’ is a very sensual record, simply exuding lustrous soundscapes that feel all encompassing and wholly immersive. From the first few notes of ‘A Few Months’ to the final closing section of the titular track, it’s unrelenting in it’s ability to deliver piece on piece of this uniquely dark and crushing style of electronic driven dreamy pop. The synths are far from the more conventionally radiant and optimistic energy you might be accustomed to. Here, they’re almost a counterpoint to the darkness, or even a pillar to uphold it on. Roze’s vocal harmonies are definitively a highlight to remember.
Amidst a myriad of alternative pop records, May Roze stands out for her unique spin on the genre. With an innate sense of darkness and a hypnotic air that cascades around each piece, ‘Heal’ is a transcendentally ethereal piece of dark pop that has you completely swooning in Roze’s lustrous arrangements and deceptively hypnotic harmonies.
