MDK FLA’s ‘Zerotime’ is a relentless, pulsating, aggressive, and altogether raucous project. Combining a host of different stylistic elements, this raging mix and medley of heavy metal, alternative rock, and even bits of drum and bass doesn’t drop energy for a moment’s notice. There’s a rage to it, an undying and unnerving aggression that breathes new life while still maintaining a melodic sincerity and care. Opening with a flourishing guitar riff that’s exceptionally rapid fire in speed and tone, ‘Alejandro’ soon gives way to a melodic chorus line while also leaving the road open for a beastie boys/rage against the machine inspired rap delivery midway through.
The energy doesn’t dissipate for a moment. On ‘Celerity’, MDK FLA jumps to another rung, hurling a rapid fire heavy metal riff reminiscent of a Metallica sounding single from the 80s. That fervour, that relentless almost raging energy is the driving force of this record without a doubt. Never for a moment on Zerotime do you feel that you’re being withdrawn from this energy. I find ‘Renegade’ to be the record’s highlight tune. Combining a strange melodic sheen with a raging metallic riff alongside avant-garde arrangements, it really represents the full breadth and scale that this artist is able to deliver.
Defiant of genre and alone in style, MDK FLA’s powerful piece ‘Zerotime’ is a masterful experiment into the realms of offbeat and differentiated heavy metal music. It’s minimal on the vocals, more so focused on the energy of the arrangement and the dexterity of the instrumentation. A fascinating project to dive into.
