Meggie Brown has style, that much is indisputable. Their aesthetic, delivery, and performance on ‘Wasted on Today’ exudes coolness and assuredness. Named last year as one of the artists of 2020 by The Guardian, they’ve slowly built up their reputation. In the last year, during the lockdown, Meggie wrote and record an EP with Sunny Robertson at Float Rock Home Studio with backing band Forrest Flowers & long time music companion Kayleigh Cheer, Meggie’s drummer. It allowed Meggie the chance to explore their gender identity, eventually sharing that they’re transgender. The latest EP from Meggie reflects this period of introspection and coming to terms with a new identity. Amidst a troubling time, the offbeat, lo-fi, and suave EP ‘Home’ was born.
Theirs an intensity to ‘Wasted On Today’ that’s actually a subtext to the smoothness with which Brown delivers the lyrics. The video brings that half of the song to life with verve. Directed and edited by Meggie, it serves as an indicator of the sheer emotional depth that the isolation induced onto them. Already in the good books, Meggie has made a fan out of Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos. Their imprint on indie rock is indisputable, and with Alex’s co-sign and assistance on Brown’s work, it’s only a matter of time before Brown is hitting the same stratosphere.
If you’re looking for a piece of indie rock that’s going to blow you away with its swagger, look no further. This is a landmark track.
