Like any of their work has been in the past, Moon and Aries seek to transport their listeners into the future on their latest EP ‘BREAKTHEMATRIX (Episode One)’. The majestic synth driven electronic pop record is loaded with opulent and luxurious melodies that feel futuristic but rooted in a certain classical style that’s innately timeless. From the opener to the closer, the succinct three part record feels radiant and warm without even once letting a moment of dullness or darkness creep in.
Even on the rather slow and careful treading o f the record’s opening piece, ‘Closer And Closer’, the pitter patter of the synth work that continually beats behind the heavenly harmonic vocal performance just adds a layer of enchantment that transforms it from something potentially melancholic into something sparklingly resplendent. Their unique fusion of futurism and nostalgia is precisely what makes Moon and Aries so appealing. In a modern musical era where that contrasting approach often tends to pay the best dividends, exemplified perhaps in Dua Lipa’s album choices, its’ no surprise that this latest record hits all the right notes with beaming precision.
‘The In Between’ feels like an escapist fantasy, almost like falling into a void that readily accepts you and swallows you whole into a shimmering and glowing flourish of glitter and sparkles amidst a wider cloud of darkness. The more minimalist approach of ‘Losing Control’, restrained and spoken in its mood and melody makes for a closing piece that has you feeling slightly detached from its ethos, but perhaps that precisely why it works as it does.
