Opening with a rather high octane set of keys and screeches, Mortal Prophets hurl you into “Born Under A Bad Sign” with a rather visceral cry before the vocals come in to this haunting epic. As soon as they emerge, they cut to black before remerging with a pounding drum pattern. “Hard luck and trouble is my only friend” he sings with a tinge of melancholy and acceptance all at once. It’s a fusion of multiple styles, a true art rock escapade that traverses elements but thrives in its experimentation. The dark baritone that John Beckmann presents contrasts wonderfully the more dreamlike and ethereal atmosphere that he’s singing over.
There’s a sense of dismay that’s conveyed in the lyrics, but even that’s contrasted by the up tempo and often high octane arrangement that create an emotion that’s simultaneously entrancing and uplifting while acknowledging the darkness within.
A mesmerising haze of a post rock tune.
