A jangling, slightly raw in its recording pop mesh of hazy guitars and moody melancholic vocals with a gleaming exterior, Moviola’s ‘Zero Sum’ is the kind of modern indie pop rock that feels strangely nostalgic while also being representative of the times. The lovely acapella harmonies that come through in the chorus are a definitive highlight, having you singing along and humming behind the powerful lyrics that’s being relayed onto you. It’s almost explaining the futility of it all, the idea that for whatever we take or gain, there’s an equal loss happening somewhere else. There’s no shared winning, someone’s losing at the cost of each success.
And, despite that slightly dreary and dismal outlook towards society, there’s still an underlying sense of wonder and enjoyment that Moviola create in the sheer good natured and fun spirit of the riffs. A lovely piece of indie rock.
