With an incredibly inviting vocal performance, which is really more of a recitation from vocalist Monica Salazar, Needy Beast’s first song is as intriguing as it is impressive. The lyrics are drawn from the Frank O’Hara poem “Mayakovsky”, with a performance that gives a coy spin on the poem’s themes of heartbreak and existential crisis. But they’re guised and uttered under an absolute forest of electronic sounds that feels like an experiential journey unlike most.
Needy Beast is an LA-based clown car of talented friends who love electro-pop, with producer/multi-instrumentalist Adam Moerder at the wheel. It feels and sounds like an art house piece, simultaneously bewilderingly weird but continually more and more provoking. You can’t help but feel that you need more by the time it closes out. A wonderful mash of a variety of ideas and sounds.
