A self-proclaimed ‘narcissist crippled with self-doubt’, Nicholas Rowe’s foray into folk music began when he stumbled upon the works of Bob Dylan. While the legendary folk artist might not be a direct bar for comparison, you can tell Rowe has drawn inspiration from the quirkiness and difference that Dylan brought to his vocal style and guitar melodies. There’s something inherently distinct about ‘I Built It Myself’, a style that’s built off of a rather dreamy and spacious production landscape with a bit of electric guitar sprinkled in. Nicholas Rowe’s own vocal performance isn’t the typical singer-songwriter stylised delivery either, a much more intriguing and unique style of an almost meandering delivery is brought out.
‘I Built It Myself’ is very distinct and that’s it strongest marker. It’s a folk song that’s exceptionally alternative, continually changing. You find yourself drawn to its difference, engaged to its enigma, and loving its languidness.
