It might be ambitious, it might be a farce, it might all be a fantasy, but living for a tomorrow where the world is in a better place than it is today should be something we’re all hoping for. Be it climate change or political collapse, there’s always something looming over our heads that signals for worse days. But on ‘Future Dream’, Norrisette sees something more promising, something we can all get behind and believe in. Her latest EP is synthesis of translucent and haunting sounds that combine for a soundscape to warp you in wholeheartedly. It’s a bit unsettling at first, but slowly it starts to break you down and leave you feeling strangely reassured. Combining electronic sounds with a folk theme, the folktronica style is perfected here like you’ve never heard before
Influenced by classical folk artists like Simon & Garfunkel to modern experimental figures like FKA Twigs, the convergence of the two influence seems odd but is made complete sense of with just one listen through of Future Dream. On the first track itself, ‘Hydra’ showcases Norrisette’s ability to build and grow a piece with purpose and vigour is displayed with scale. The key work, her haunting falsetto, and the techno breakdown all combine to create a uniquely invigorating piece of haunting folktronica that’s definitively unique.
Every song on the record takes an inspiration from an element of nature. ‘Hydra’ is about water, and it builds with a flow that’s sustainable and content, building into an idea of flooding. ‘Old Name’ is about earth and reforestation, rewilding, and more. ‘Bone Forest’ has an atmospheric presence to it, light and blowing to resemble the air it draws inspiration from. ‘Prometheus’ is sonically and topically distinct from the other three, pulsating and more in your face. It’s about fire, humanity, and how civilization corrupts the sanctity of the nature around us. ‘Give the fire back’ she sings completely out of the style and sync of the previous pieces.
A strange and wildly powerful experiential piece of experimental electronic music.
