A joint effort from Canadian MCs Pats and The Kyd, ‘PK ALL DAY’ uses heavy and pumping boom bap production styles that are heavily influenced and interpolate from nostalgic 90s and early 00s sounds while creating a sumptuous modern day rap record. Filled to the brim with smooth and exciting pieces of catchy and punchy bars, PK ALL DAY doesn’t disappoint. From the record’s more gritty and raw cuts like “No Jive$” to the more laidback and feel-good, vibey flows on “Better Times,” the project has something intriguing for any average hip-hop fan who’s interestedin treating their ears to something beyond the current crop of more atmospheric and auto-tune driven production.
40 Below is a definite highlight for me on this record. The sampling on this track is simply perfect with the first it rains then it pours vocal interpolation just serving as the perfect reprieve between verses. Better Times also serves as the record’s piece of smooth and vibe driven tunes.
Both Pats and The Kyd hail from Chatham, Ontario but today are split across the world. While Pats is based in Vancouver, The Kyd finds himself based in London. Heavily influenced by early and formative hip-hop records like Nas’s Illmatic and Eminem’s first slew of albums, the duo definitely take that more lyrical and flow driven style into their work.
A masterful piece of punchy soul driven hip-hop that doesn’t compromise its catchiness for its style, PK ALL DAY is suave, slick, and smooth.
