The second record from Finnish producer Perttu Leinonen sees the artist allow the listener to embark on their own experiential journey through sound. At five tracks and close to an hour long, it’s the kind of record that’s not meant to be heard in pieces or in parting. It’s a full length expedition, an experience that needs to be imbibed wholeheartedly from end to end for you to derive your own sense of meaning and accomplishment through where the sound takes you. The internal monologue within you starts to drive its own path, dictating and focusing itself with a more purposeful vision as the droning noise starts to bellow down in pitter patters all around you. Mind Open is precisely what its name implies and demands. You almost have to enter this record with a free state of being.
Perttu’s got a bottle that’s contents are your own to decipher. Slow, subtle, and never once the slightest bit abrasive, ‘Mind Open’ entirely allows the listener to expedite their own experiential journey in piece of experimental drone music that has you transfixed and hypnotised throughout. “Harmonic structures are found to be healing for human body and mind so the goal was to incorporate the natural harmonic states and also go beyond the ordinary through using sound and vibrations it creates. It is a message in a bottle to find the people that will resonate with it.“
So when you embark on the first few notes of ‘As long as you remember’, don’t let yourself get detracted by other content or mediums. Go for a walk and let this be the soundtrack that drowns out all the noise around you. In the midst of it all when you hit ‘And bring back the essence’, your own sense of clarity is going to hit a state of absolute serenity and mindfulness that at least for myself, has been long wanting.
