Somewhat classical, somewhat contemporary, S J Denney’s ‘And Then You Wonder…’ is a melodic and delicate piece of string driven indie pop. It feels like you’re hearing a song from your childhood, somehow deriving a melody that feels wholly familiar but uniquely intriguing. The incorporation of classical arrangements with a distinctively nostalgic melody makes Denney’s latest track an absolute delight to sink yourself into. Topically as well, ‘And Then You Wonder…’ also becomes particularly relevant for all of us finding life in pandemic. It makes you yearn for the freedoms we used to have, the sheer scope of life when COVID was far from reality.
The Essex based writer definitely derives his inspiration from his influences growing up, namely the likes of The Beatles and Neil Young. On this track, there’s even a melodic arrangement reminiscent of Eleanor Rigby. It’s hard not to find yourself smiling along to Denney’s uniquely nostalgic melodies. It just brings out emotions that you wouldn’t conceive of having.
