Rich with sounds that straight out of a Nintendo video game and pop music decades from today, Vancouver based indie pop artist Sad China’s latest single is a hyperpop gem for a gloomy day. Topically, the song was written on the experience of quarantine, the highs and lows of isolation. It describes the mundane everyday, a routine that became not just repetitive but claustrophobic. ‘ilyimy’ allowed Sad China the opportunity to express and process the grief and trauma she experienced after a painful breakup. That confusing state she found herself in, simultaneously yearning to be with her friends and in and about society yet still stalking her ex on social media forms the bedrock of the song.
Sad China released their self-titled dream pop debut EP in 2016. Sharing the stage with Tonye Aganaba and Adewolf, and playing livestreams with KeAloha, Sleepy Gonzales, and Blonde Diamond, she’s making a name for herself in the space of indie pop with a unique edge of her own.
