Some of my favourite indie pop tunes actually veer far away from what the genre’s norm tends to associate itself with. Traditionally more optimistic and upbeat, indie pop doesn’t tend to go into more darker and sedative tones often. But a few artists, namely the ones more associated with the dream pop side of the genre, have crafted a sub-genre that’s able to have the listener floating, in a state of complete bliss as the music works as a wonderful anaesthetic. On ‘ Blackpool’, Sandi Glowe has outdone her contemporaries in this field with style. The twenty four year old Rome born, Manchester residing singer songwriter perfectly captures that spacey production, sensual vocals, and silky guitar.
Predictably, ‘Blackpool’ is about the town itself. Sandy says, “This song is the product of a whole journey and universe, like a small vial that holds 6 years of my life. The song has been written raw, acoustically after a trip to Blackpool, my first trip to Norther England.” The song’s almost a time capsule, one that reminds her of a previous moment and place now that she’s moved back to Italy. That sense of nostalgia prevails even as a listener who’s never been to the location, purely for the soundscape that Sandy’s developed.
It’s not often I’d wax lyrical about a dream pop tune. More often than not I find that while I enjoy listening to the genre, it does tend to all blend into a single style. But ‘Blackpool’ is different. It’s cinematic, nostalgic, and euphoric. An absolutely transportive tune from an artist who is bound to make airwaves.
