Spencer Brill’s debut “Hospital Song” is a shared experience that many of us have gone through. Written about his weeklong stay in the hospital with COVID-19, the song narrates the symptoms and the myriad of treatments that you’re subject to while dealing with this painful disease. It showcases the angst through a sonic arrangement reminiscent to the early 2000s groups like Weezer and the like. There’s an almost satirical element to the lyrics, a rather anxious yet also playful narration of the sheer ridiculousness of being in that situation. But, it’s also at heart a song about perseverance in the face of this unending adversity that the disease places on us. As the chorus line goes, Brill crys out that if he were to make it out, he’d never take life for granted again.
It’s quirky and catchy, built off melodies that are eternal and a theme that’s universal. Introspect and find value in where you are if you make it out of a position that puts you on the brink of losing it all.
