Lead by the immensely entertaining and melodic ‘HONEST’ earlier this year, the album follows a similar trajectory in exploring the double entendre of love and relationships and how they interact with our day to day lives. Having been making music since he was just 12, Statz has already developed a distinctive style of hip-hop that’s flow and lyrically astute, but really driven by unique melodies that are more in line with a soulful r&b record. The chorus on ‘HONEST’ attests to this better than anything else.
Each song on the record delves into something personal, with Statz allowing himself to be vulnerable enough to pen stories down that are relatable for us listeners. It’s never too dark however, with Statz always finding silver linings on each track to hold onto. Described as a crash course in his own love life, the songs on this record as as innately personal as they are universally relatable. It was the result of a terrible break up that actually saw Statz unleash his creative self, uncovering a slew of gems and his best creative work.
The choruses across this record are infectious as hell, loaded with melody and groove to sink yourself into and replay again and again. In between, the verses are carried by punchy and head bop worthy beats that have you engrossed. Of course, at its core, the album’s best suite comes in the lyricism. A series of honest tracks that unravel as much about Statz as they do yourself. It’s far too real to listen without feeling something yourself.
A hip-hop album to remember for this year for any listener who loves a bit of melody injected into an otherwise classic soulful rap record.
