It’s quite hard to definitively pin down what ‘WE CLIMBED A TREE’ really is all about, both topically and sonically. The offbeat record from Brooklyn based Stori Brooks oscillates from being completely and wholly unsettling to strangely intriguing. The avant-garde experimental electronic record never really feels like it’s settled, constantly throwing up so many unique sonic elements and ultimately spoken word vocal performances to throw off your expectations and beliefs on what the record’s really about.
The title of Stori’s newest project, “WE CLIMBED A TREE” pays homage to the appointed meeting area of three friends that shared pivotal moments in each other’s lives. Although Brooks doesn’t quite directly describe or address those fundamental moments, “WE CLIMBED A TREE” celebrates the purity of that moment and those memories, the reckless abandon, the joyfulness, and the otherwise delightful happiness and assuredness felt in those times.
An endearing if strange electronic record.
