The Ruby Tears – NEVER GONNA BE (LIKE IT IS ON TV)

A two track EP that has a punch, a flavour, and a bounce to enjoy, The Ruby Tears bring back old school rock and roll that’s bound to have you feeling all kinds of nostalgic on “NEVER GONNA BE (LIKE IT IS ON TV). Kickstarting their journey as a purely online songwriting partnership for all of 12 months, this UK based outfit boasts members from either side of Manchester and Liverpool. Having both grown up on the music of the 70s, there’s a clear and distinct influence of that era’s sound in the arrangements on each of these arrangements.

The opening titular track really has you harkening back to that sound, a swagger that comes out on John Goodfellow’s vocals that’s reminiscent of a Dire Straits esque delivery in its coolness and lackadaisical energy. But it’s on Piccadilly Sunrise that I really found myself adoring the panache and finesse of The Ruby Tears. As a diehard classic rock enthusiast, this felt like opening a bottle lost in time. “Just another Piccadilly Sunrise” is delivered with almost exactly the same coolness and the same vibrancy in the sound that you get from the bands in that era.

For any classic rock fan, anyone who grew up on the sounds of the 70s and 80s, The Ruby Tears will not just have you feeling nostalgic, but altogether delighted that music that echoes that same emotion, that brings out that same feeling, and powers through with that same energy still can find its way into the modern era. You don’t need to be replaying the old catalogues, there’s a whole wave here waiting to be found.
