Tim Eveleigh is a storied artist, one who has had a lengthy career and a wealth of experience on a multitude of instruments and sounds. All the sounds on this project, the guitar, the piano, harmonium, bass, cajon, and of course, the vocals themselves, are all undertaken by the Croydon based singer-songwriter. On ‘In Kilnsea’, Tim moves with three songs — something old, something new, and something borrowed. An older track, a newer one, and a cover all come together to make this short and seamless EP a pleasant ride.
Starting with the titular track, ‘In Kilnsea’, Tim opens the album on a warm and fuzzy note characterised by an almost sunny acoustic guitar. It’s the kind of track you’d imagine would play on an early sunday morning or a sunset at a beach, just perfectly encapsulating those moments wherein you’re just entirely immersed in the moments to take in all the positives in life around you. On the song itself, Tim cites the inspiration as his visit to Kilnsea almost two years prior. That bit of geographic specificity, bolstered by a more general theme of yearning for someone you can’t be with, makes it all the more impactful.
On ‘Hidden’, Tim takes a more solemn and melancholic style. With a more stripped back instrumental backing, he lets his voice take focus of the track, driving it forward as the piano enters. It’s a slow burner, one that cautiously moves forward without ever hitting a dramatic crescendo. That slightly measured, restrained, and aching tone persists to give it the energy and vibe it carries. Tim’s pained ‘would you love me’ at the track’s end, perfectly captures it.
Finally, ‘The Thread’, closes out the brief but succinct EP in a more nostalgic and heart-warming way. It’s got a more jingly vibe to it that makes it a great closing piece to leave you smiling as you step out of Tim’s wonderful world.
‘In Kilnsea’ is carried by emotion. Tim’s lyrics, amazingly transcendental soundscapes, and achingly emotive vocals all combine to create an energy that is reassuring and heart-warming all at once. A definite listen for any fans of more laidback, singer-songwriter music.
