“New Signals” is warm, radiant even at times. The ever so flowery and romantic sounding power pop ballad from Tom Craven has an endearing quality to it, enhanced by Craven’s own vulnerability in his performance. The harmonies in the vocals add layers upon layers to the chorus, a kind of soothing serenade that placates you when things feel dark and despondent. It feels simultaneously sentimental while also being definitively a bit sour at the same time. The track retraces the writer’s rise, fall and eventual return, after overcoming the adversity imposed upon many of us in the past two years through circumstance and catastrophe.
At some level, the song reaches out to you when you feel you’re at your lowest. It’s about perseverance, not in a gritty or stoic way, but in one that’s sincere in acknowledging the pain you go through but reminding you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
