Replete with wacky and offbeat sounds that range from thundering, tribal percussive elements to imposingly intimidating bass, v394’s brand of hyper-pop is remarkably fresh and enticing. The Mexican artist endures heavy hearing impairments, but that doesn’t stop him from crafting such a cohesive and out there piece of futuristic pop music. The immensely distorted industrial bass diametrically stands opposed to the high pitched falsetto vocals, making for a contrast that’s surprisingly palatable. In simple terms, it’s weird as hell but wonderful as well.
Listening to ‘Clarity’ feels like being thrown up and down on a rollercoaster that periodically relents, only to make the next fall that much more impactful. All the while you feel strangely at ease, a consequence of the harmonic and categorical hyper pop vocal performance. It puts you in a trance; not a sedative one by any means, but the kind that has you wide eyed and stunned. It’s meant to be blasted as loud as your speakers can take it as you sing along with a chorus that just infuses you with feelings of liberation. If you’re a fan of future pop acts like the 100 Gecs of Charli XCX, you’d do yourself a massive favour in checking out v394. If ‘Clarity’ is anything to by, he’s well on his way to cement himself amongst the pantheon of definitive artists emerging in the genre.
