‘A Midnight So Sweet’ is wonderfully offbeat. The uniquely experimental piece of retro-soul driven art rock from What in Your Heart Can Put You in a Trance is groovy, strange, and intriguing throughout. It feels like a haze of r&b, folk, and dancehall amidst a larger sonic backdrop of psychedelic electronic elements. Loaded with funk and suave swagger, you’re left entirely enamoured by the almost blurry midnight aesthetic of it all. The vocals and lyrics just leave you slightly bewildered and perplexed but simultaneously entirely fixated and entranced.
It’s not your average midnight drive track, it’s far more obscure and ominous than most. The production is majestic, a shimmering and futuristic metallic sheen enveloped over what would be an otherwise cheery indie folk tune. Become completely subsumed by a soundscape that has you entirely bewitched, confused, and obsessed. You won’t be bored in the slightest, you might be wholly hypnotized instead.
