XIXI – Boog

The first independent solo release from D.C based producer ‘Boog’ is a masterful collection of instrumental beats that take on a wide array of inspirations within an overarching theme of hip-hop and soul focused foundations. The intention of the musicality and order of the songs is to take the listener on a tour of different sections of Prince George’s County, Maryland. It is definitely a concept record, one where each beat carefully crafts a narrative that Boog is trying to express on his own experiences and landscapes through beautifully mosaic meshed production.

Each piece on this record has a feeling, almost craving for the right rapper to hop on the track and start spitting flows to match. The late night up and downs of drive, which features a spacey beat layered with modern trap production to match is a definitive highlight. The constant and perfectly utilised samples across this record just add so much emotional depth to the record that’s otherwise wholly utilising an almost staccato production style. The vocal sample on 8409 Hamlin St. especially has you head banging excitedly throughout.

Not your average hip-hop record, and certainly not the standard style of production you might come to expect or see from the normal. It’s wildly experimental, and conceptually an absolute delight to discover at each moment. There’s so many layers, so many intricacies, and so many various features and gems hidden behind each track that gives it replay value over and above. It can serve as background music, focus music, and hype music all at once.
