Gina Castanzo, as part of the band “Zo” is churning out a melody of melancholic confidence in their new song “Cry”. A simple and clean guitar opening leads you into a well-paced number. Accented by dramatic drumming, it is structured to immerse you completely in its gloomy world for five minutes. Reminiscent of The Cranberries, sort of like a Carrie Underwood meets Greta Van Fleet sound, it is infused with solid rock belts and blues-y guitar riffs.
Castanzo’s been a vocalist for more than 5 years, having been a part of The Voice and releasing albums independently before Zo’s inception. She is now joined by Joe McEnany, Andrew Amado, Tyler Dutelleo, and veteran Philly drummer Buddy Mazzenga. The band is experienced in its artistry, and that shines through in its immaculate production. There is so much intensity and emotion packed in the music. It seems to have captured the feeling of standing alone, getting drenched in the pouring rain. It will take you back to the time that someone you craved for was too late to appreciate you – and the hurt that comes with it. In the same beat, it also reminds you of the triumph that comes with moving on, as she sings “Open your eyes and see the light“. The song heart-wrenchingly ends on: “Cry baby, cry for me, every night”. There is a hint of attitude in her voice now, like a haunting goodbye. The longing and regret eventually turn into a sure realization – a gloomy win, but a win nonetheless.
