At just seventeen years, Patrick Tabaks has a matured style and sound already being carved out. On ‘Like Home’, not only is the arrangement and composition well thought out and meticulously arranged, but it also finds itself loaded with lyrical depth that explores existentialism and introspection into his own psyche. His voice, low and brooding, brings a calming reassurance to the listener. It’s a fairly standard pop ballad initially, but the little instrumental choices and melodies that host influences from jazz to flamenco give Like Home a more eclectic feeling.
Tabaks’ has been making music for over a decade, despite just barely hitting adulthood himself. With backgrounds in opera, the piano, and even electro-pop, he’s still finding his own voice and style to be distinctive. But, if ‘Like Home’ is anything to by, you can be assured that his attention to detail and his dedication to his craft makes him a musician to keep an eye on for a while to come. An assured jazz pop song that’s carried as much by exquisite arrangement as it is by a voice that has you marvelling for how powerful yet restrained it is.
