Opening with a set of heavy drums that build tension before a riff in the background starts to wind itself up, Detention come roaring through with a classic sounding piece of pop-punk that’s bound to have you releasing your inner teenage self. The drum work on this single is by far the most exciting single part of the arrangement, completely commanding and seizing the stage. The flourish of detuned guitars add that level of rawness in the expression while Elliott Carter’s ever so expressive vocal performance has you singing along with an angst and glee in equal fashion.
It feels authentic, something that can’t be said with a lot of pale modern punk-rock imitations. There’s a rawness to the emotion being conveyed, a sincerity behind the aggression, and a palpable quality to the overarching angst. A delight for any fan of the genre looking for modern examples.
