The 8th full length release from Gimmik sets out to do precisely what its name entails. Sonic Poetry, an epic 16 track collection of experimental electronic sounds that range from offbeat video game esque glitch beeps and noises to subtle and all encompassing melodic rivers is a mellifluous escape into a fantasy sci-fi world in your head. Far from a mundane ambient piece, Sonic Poetry seizes your attention in a way that’s drastically different from your standard ambient piece. It’s not at all wholly relaxing or so to speak background music. The entire record exists at the front of your attention, demanding your focus and piquing your intrigue in a constant almost relentless level. The flurry of beeps that are bound to fire onto you on the opening piece ‘Here I Am’ grasp you into a whirlwind of sounds that rarely slow down or find a dull moment whatsoever.
Even the more melodic pieces, like the slow and soothing ‘Meadows’ feels like an experience to cherish and imbibe with all your heart and attention. Here, Gimmik feels at perhaps his most exciting. There’s nothing abrasive, it’s an almost bewitchingly enchanting electronic piece that takes you down a road of complete immersion. On ‘Hellow Mr. James’, this goes a different direction. Beginning with a sort of fantastical, almost oriental sounding initial melody, the song starts to pick up with a fiery flourish of a percussive rhythm that flurries down you.
Gimmik, the project of Martin Haidinger, is one of the most exciting and melodic while still being decidedly experimental names in electronic music today. Check out Sonic Poetry now!
