Birmingham rockers Lucky Number You are unlike anything out there today. Their eclectic, energetic, and effervescent brand of hyper produced indie rock is a wondrous breath of fresh air. Drawing from modern indie rock sounds while incorporating a host of synths and call backs to the melodies of the 80s and 90s, they’re able to synthesize a record that sounds nostalgic while being keenly forward thinking. It’s poppy but not too far down that hole to completely distance itself from being an out and out rock record. Lying somewhere in between, ‘Aftercare’ makes a name for itself as one of the most refreshing pieces of independent rock music out this year.
The album starts off on a rivetingly high note, with ‘Clown World Rises’ being an indisputable highlight. It begins subtly, building slowly for about a minute till it hits a splendorous and glamourous resplendence as the combination of synths, drums, and guitars strike you in full force like a splash of different paints on a blank canvass. As opening tracks go, there couldn’t be a more appropriate or hooking piece to reel you in.
It’s not like the album starts to dip from that moment onwards, with tracks like Disassociator already doing good numbers and reaching critical acclaim. The group started during 2020 as a studio project with one aim; the band would push themselves creatively to produce a full LP whilst being locked down in their home studios.
The resulting record is simply immaculately produced, joyful all around, and filled with fun for any listeners. If you enjoy the likes of Capital Cities and indie rock artists with a bit more pomp and bravado, Aftercare is bound to chirp your spirits up.
