The lead single off The Gloom’s upcoming 2nd EP – Coffee & Clementines, Requiem (for Joan of Arc) is an incredibly moody and even melancholic piece of post punk. It’s written and performed like a ballad, something that sounds incredibly dark and dreary while still containing within it a spark, a singular candle flame that shines resplendently amidst the overarching blackness. Not just utilising guitar work, ‘Requiem (for Joan of Arc)’ has a scintillating synth section that makes the entire record feel like something constantly oscillating between heaven and hell. There’s undoubtedly something spiritual about the piece, something that makes it feel larger than life and this plane itself.
The mellow comfort of the cello, the slightly unnerving guitar riff, the ever so expressive and soulful vocal performance, and the magically grandiose synths all start to build slightly until they crescendo into a full arrangement that just unloads its entire weight onto you.
A truly magical, genre-defying piece of modern rock.
